Three Reasons Why You May Need Rhinoplasty Surgery
Rhinoplasty, or a nose job as it is commonly called, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States. Some Houston men and women have never been happy with the shape of their nose and how it complements their other facial features, and desire a cosmetic change. Others have difficulty breathing, and a procedure called functional rhinoplasty helps them to breathe more easily. Read on as we discuss three reasons why you may need rhinoplasty surgery.
1. You Feel Your Nose Is Too Wide
Being unhappy with the width of your nose can make some Houston men and women feel embarrassed about how their nose appears, and how it complements the other aspects of their face. Rhinoplasty, performed by a skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Fusi or Dr. Craig, can resolve these issues.
The techniques that Dr. Fusi and Dr. Craig will use to narrow your wide nose all depend on your nose’s unique anatomy. For example, if your nose appears wide because you have wide nostrils, Dr. Fusi and Dr. Craig may use a surgical technique called alar baser reduction. With this surgical technique, our doctors narrow the nostrils by removing tissue from them. All scarring is hidden inside the crease of the nose.
However, if your nose appears too wide for your face because you have a wide nasal bone, our doctors may need to break the nose, a surgical procedure called osteotomy. The breaking of the nose allows our doctors to reset it, allowing them to reposition it in a narrower position.
Finally, Dr. Fusi and Dr. Craig may use a rhinoplasty technique on their Houston patients to make the nose protrude farther from the face. By doing this, the nose often appears more narrow and triangular.
2. You Have a Nasal Hump that Makes You Feel Self-Conscious
A nasal hump on your nose can make Houston patients feel self-conscious, especially if they feel like it negatively impacts their profile. By shaving the nasal hump down, Dr. Fusi and Dr. Craig can create a smoother nasal appearance without a visible hump.
3. You Have Difficulty Breathing and Desire Functional Rhinoplasty
Some of Dr. Fusi and Dr. Craig’s rhinoplasty patients have no cosmetic concerns with their noses at all. Instead, they have chronic difficulties breathing through their nose and seek out functional rhinoplasty to allow them to breathe more easily. There are several reasons that you may need functional rhinoplasty, including:
- You have chronic nasal congestion;
- You find that you breathe through your mouth, especially at night;
- You constantly have dry mouth;
- You have noticed a reduced sense of smell;
- You have recurring nosebleeds with no other medical explanation;
- You repeatedly get sinus infections and/or sinus pressure headaches;
- You have Eustachian Tube Dysfunction; and/or
- You experience unexplained sleeping problems with no other medical cause identified.
Because there are so many different reasons that necessitate functional rhinoplasty, there are several different surgical techniques that Dr. Fusi and Dr. Craig may use during your surgery, all dependent on your unique nasal anatomy and your personalized care plan.
